Analysis of the Current Status of Blood Component Transfusion and the Returned Blood Components


Abstract
In recent transfusion practice, there has been great changes combined by various aspects. Blood utilization review has been used to minimize inappropriate transfusion and improve the quality of transfusion practice.
The author observed the changes in component transfusion from 1990 through 1998 at Soonchunhyang Kumi hospital. The effectiveness of the transfusions were evaluated by the cause, the time of blood returned to the blood bank, and the blood discarded by clinical departments for the periode of past four years.
The results were as follows :
1. The annual amount of blood transfusion for 9 years was 6,067units and the annual average rate of blood component transfusion was 98.4%.
2. The annual average rate of blood returning to the blood bank was 2.7%, and the highest rate were observed in department of general surgery in 1995 and department of internal medicine in 1998.
3. The most common cause of blood returning to the blood bank was improvement of the patients condition.
4. The average time of blood returning to the blood bank was seven hours and twelve minutes.
In conclusion, a dialogue and studies between the transfusing physician and the transfusion medicines pecialist were desirable for more effective and appropriate utilization of blood components and improvement of transfusion practice.
